Chapter 2 – Oceans and Continents
Detailed notes • Concepts • Activities • Questions • Competency practice • MCQs • Worksheet
Chapter focus: Earth’s major landmasses and water bodies, their location on maps and their relationship with climate, resources and human life.
🎯 Learning Goals
- Identify Earth’s continents and oceans.
- Understand their broad spatial distribution.
- Relate oceans and continents to human life.
- Use maps and globes to locate major physical features.
🌏 Continents
Earth’s major landmasses are commonly grouped into seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.
🌊 Oceans
The five commonly identified oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic Oceans. Oceans are interconnected parts of Earth’s global water system.
🗺️ Reading a World Map
A world map helps compare the relative locations of continents and oceans. Direction, scale and labels help students interpret spatial relationships.
🚢 Oceans and Human Life
Oceans influence climate and provide resources and routes for transport and trade. Coastal communities often depend on marine environments for livelihoods.
🏔️ Continents and Physical Diversity
Continents contain varied landscapes, climates and ecosystems. These physical differences influence settlement, agriculture, transport and ways of life.
🔬 Activity
On a blank world map, label the seven continents and five oceans. Then choose three pairs of places and describe their relative direction.
