Chapter 1 – Locating Places on the Earth
Detailed notes • Concepts • Activities • Questions • Competency practice • MCQs • Worksheet
Chapter focus: how maps, directions, latitude, longitude, coordinates, scale and symbols help us locate and describe places.
🎯 Learning Goals
- Understand why location matters in geography.
- Use latitude and longitude to describe locations.
- Recognise the Equator and Prime Meridian.
- Understand directions, grids, maps, scale and symbols.
- Use coordinates to locate places.
🗺️ Maps and Location
A map is a representation of a place or part of Earth’s surface. Maps help us locate places, understand relationships between places and communicate geographical information.
🌐 Latitude
Latitudes are imaginary lines running east-west. The Equator is 0° latitude. Latitude tells how far a place is north or south of the Equator.
🌍 Longitude
Longitudes are imaginary lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole. The Prime Meridian is 0° longitude. Longitude tells how far a place is east or west of the Prime Meridian.
🧭 Directions and Coordinates
North, south, east and west are the four cardinal directions. Coordinates combine latitude and longitude to identify a location more precisely.
📏 Scale and Symbols
Maps use symbols to represent features and scale to relate map distance to actual distance. A legend or key explains commonly used symbols.
🔬 Activity
Take a simple map of your school or neighbourhood. Add a title, direction indicator, symbols and a simple scale. Identify three places using relative directions.
