Chapter 3 – Landforms and Life
Detailed notes • Concepts • Activities • Questions • Competency practice • MCQs • Worksheet
Chapter focus: major landforms such as mountains, plateaus and plains and how physical geography shapes water, settlement, livelihoods and ways of life.
🎯 Learning Goals
- Identify major landforms.
- Compare mountains, plateaus and plains.
- Understand how landforms influence climate, water and human activities.
- Connect physical geography with settlement and livelihoods.
🏔️ Mountains
Mountains are high areas with steep slopes and significant elevation. They can influence rainfall, river systems, transport and settlement patterns.
⛰️ Plateaus
Plateaus are elevated areas with relatively level or gently rolling surfaces. They can contain mineral resources and support agriculture or grazing depending on climate and soils.
🌾 Plains
Plains are generally broad and relatively level areas. Many plains have fertile soils and accessible transport, which can support dense settlement and agriculture.
🌊 Rivers and Landforms
Rivers shape landscapes through erosion, transportation and deposition. River valleys and plains can provide water and fertile land for human communities.
🏘️ Landforms and Life
People adapt their homes, occupations, transport and food practices to local physical conditions. Landforms influence, but do not completely determine, human life.
🔬 Activity
Compare a mountain region, plateau and plain using a table with relief, water availability, agriculture, settlement and transport.
