Chapter 3 – Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body

Detailed notes • Nutrients • Balanced diet • Food tests • Deficiency diseases • Mindful & sustainable eating • MCQs • Worksheet

Chapter focus: Food gives us energy and the nutrients needed for growth, repair and healthy body functions. This chapter connects India’s diverse food habits with nutrients, balanced diets, deficiency diseases, mindful choices and reducing food waste.

🎯 Learning Goals

  • Explain why we need food and identify major nutrients.
  • Relate carbohydrates, proteins and fats to their functions.
  • Recognise the roles of vitamins, minerals, water and roughage.
  • Understand simple tests used to identify some nutrients.
  • Explain balanced diet and deficiency diseases.
  • Make thoughtful, hygienic and sustainable food choices.

🍚 1. What Do We Eat?

Food habits vary across India because crops, climate, soil, local traditions and availability differ. A healthy meal can contain foods from several groups rather than depending on one food item.

Traditional foods can be nutritious and locally suited. Eating mindfully means paying attention to what, how much, when and why we eat.

⚡ 2. Nutrients in Food

Nutrient Main role Common sources
Carbohydrates Provide energy Rice, wheat, potatoes, millets
Proteins Growth and repair Dal, beans, milk, eggs, nuts
Fats Concentrated energy and other body functions Oils, nuts, seeds, dairy
Vitamins Support normal body functions Fruits, vegetables and other foods
Minerals Needed for several body processes Milk, vegetables, pulses and other foods
Water Helps body processes and temperature regulation Water and water-rich foods
Roughage Supports healthy digestion Whole grains, fruits, vegetables

🧪 3. Simple Food Tests

Some nutrients can be indicated by simple tests. An iodine test can indicate starch: a blue-black colour suggests starch is present. A paper test can indicate fats when a translucent greasy spot remains. Protein can be tested using appropriate laboratory reagents under teacher supervision.

Safety: Food tests involving chemicals should be performed only with appropriate guidance and safety procedures. Never taste laboratory samples.

🥗 4. Balanced Diet

A balanced diet supplies the nutrients and other components the body needs in suitable amounts. The exact diet varies with age, activity, health needs, culture and locally available foods.

A balanced meal may include cereals or millets, pulses or other protein sources, vegetables, fruits, suitable fats and adequate water.

🩺 5. Deficiency Diseases

Lack of particular nutrients over time can lead to deficiency disorders. Examples commonly studied include vitamin C deficiency causing scurvy, vitamin D deficiency causing rickets, iodine deficiency causing goitre and iron deficiency causing anaemia. A varied diet helps reduce the risk of nutrient deficiencies.

🌾 6. Millets and Local Foods

Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi are traditional grains used in many parts of India. Including a variety of locally available foods can improve dietary diversity and may support sustainable food choices.

♻️ 7. Mindful and Sustainable Eating

  • Choose a varied and balanced diet.
  • Eat appropriate portions and avoid unnecessary overeating.
  • Prefer fresh, safe and hygienically prepared food.
  • Avoid wasting edible food.
  • Consider locally available seasonal foods.
  • Reduce unnecessary packaging where practical.

📍 8. Food Miles and Food Choices

Food miles describe the distance food travels from where it is produced to where it is consumed. Distance is only one part of environmental impact, but choosing suitable local and seasonal foods can sometimes reduce transport needs.

📋 Worked Examples

Example 1 – Identify a Nutrient

A meal contains rice, dal, vegetables and curd. Rice mainly contributes carbohydrates; dal provides substantial protein; vegetables contribute vitamins, minerals and fibre; curd provides protein and minerals.

Example 2 – Starch Test

If iodine is added to a food sample and it turns blue-black, the observation indicates the presence of starch.

Example 3 – Balanced Meal

Instead of eating only rice, a meal combining rice or millet, dal, vegetables, curd and fruit gives a wider range of nutrients.

🧠 Think Like a Scientist

  1. Why can no single food provide everything the body needs?
  2. Why should food tests be based on observations rather than guesses?
  3. Why can the same food be part of a healthy diet in one quantity but unsuitable in excessive quantity?
  4. Why is dietary diversity important?
  5. How can avoiding food waste be both economical and environmentally useful?

📝 Important Practice Questions

  1. Why do we need food?
  2. Name the major nutrients.
  3. Give two sources of proteins.
  4. What is a balanced diet?
  5. What does an iodine test indicate?
  6. What is a deficiency disease?
  7. Name two deficiency diseases and the nutrients associated with them.
  8. Why are fruits and vegetables important in a diet?
  9. What is mindful eating?
  10. How can we reduce food waste?

🔥 Competency / HOTS

  1. A student eats mostly one type of food because it is their favourite. Explain why variety is still important.
  2. Design a one-day balanced meal plan using foods commonly available in your region.
  3. A food sample turns blue-black with iodine. What can you conclude, and what can you not conclude from this test alone?
  4. Two families eat different traditional foods but both have varied diets. Explain how both diets can support health.
  5. Suggest three practical ways a school can reduce edible food waste.
