Chapter 2 – Diversity in the Living World

Detailed notes • Living organisms • Diversity • Habitats • Classification • Adaptation • Questions • MCQs • Worksheet

Chapter focus: The living world contains enormous variety. Organisms differ in size, shape, structure, habitat and way of life, yet they also share characteristics that help us recognise life.

🎯 Learning Goals

  • Recognise the diversity of living organisms.
  • Identify common characteristics of living things.
  • Understand why organisms are grouped or classified.
  • Relate body features to habitats and ways of life.
  • Use observable characteristics to compare organisms.
  • Appreciate biodiversity and the need to protect it.

🌍 1. Diversity of Life

Living organisms range from microscopic forms to very large plants and animals. They may live in forests, deserts, oceans, freshwater, grasslands, mountains and human surroundings.

❤️ 2. Characteristics of Living Organisms

Living organisms show processes such as growth, movement or response to stimuli, respiration, obtaining and using food, reproduction and excretion. No single everyday feature should be used alone to decide whether something is living.

🏞️ 3. Habitat

A habitat is the place or environment where an organism normally lives. It provides conditions and resources needed for survival.

  • Terrestrial habitats: land environments such as forests, deserts and mountains.
  • Aquatic habitats: water environments such as ponds, rivers, lakes and seas.

🦎 4. Adaptations

An adaptation is a feature or behaviour that helps an organism survive in its environment. Examples include streamlined bodies in many aquatic animals, thick fur in some cold-region animals and specialised roots in certain plants.

Adaptations are connected to the conditions in which organisms live; the same feature may be useful in one environment but not another.

🔎 5. Grouping Organisms

Scientists group organisms using observable and other biological characteristics. Grouping makes the enormous diversity of life easier to study, compare and communicate.

🌱 6. Plants and Animals

Plants and animals show many differences in how they obtain food and interact with their surroundings, but both are living organisms with common life processes. Within each broad group there is further diversity.

📋 Worked Examples

Example 1 – Habitat and Feature

A fish has a streamlined body that helps it move through water. The feature is related to its aquatic habitat.

Example 2 – Desert Plant

Many desert plants have features that reduce water loss or help them obtain and store water. These features are adaptations to dry conditions.

Example 3 – Why Grouping Helps

If hundreds of organisms were studied without grouping, comparison would be difficult. Grouping by shared characteristics helps organise information and identify relationships.

🧠 Think Like a Scientist

  1. Why are there so many different forms of life?
  2. Why is habitat important for survival?
  3. How can a body feature provide evidence about an organism’s habitat?
  4. Why should organisms be grouped using clear characteristics?
  5. Why is biodiversity important to ecosystems and humans?

📝 Important Practice Questions

  1. What is meant by diversity in the living world?
  2. List five characteristics commonly associated with living organisms.
  3. What is a habitat?
  4. Differentiate between terrestrial and aquatic habitats.
  5. What is an adaptation?
  6. Give two examples of adaptations.
  7. Why do scientists classify organisms?
  8. How can body structure give clues about habitat?
  9. Give examples of organisms living in a pond ecosystem.
  10. Why should biodiversity be protected?

🔥 Competency / HOTS

  1. A camel and a fish have very different body structures. Explain how their habitats can help us understand these differences.
  2. Imagine a plant from a wet habitat is moved permanently to a very dry desert. What challenges might it face?
  3. Two organisms look similar but live in very different habitats. What additional information would help you compare them?
  4. Why is it difficult to study biodiversity without grouping organisms?
  5. Design a simple observation activity to compare three organisms around your school.
