Chapter 13: Our Home: Earth, a Unique Life-Sustaining Planet

Earth systems • Atmosphere • Water • Life • Sustainability

🌍 1. Why Is Earth Special?

Earth supports a remarkable variety of life because several conditions work together: liquid water, a suitable atmosphere, a source of energy from the Sun, an appropriate range of temperatures and the cycling of essential materials. Life does not depend on one factor alone; Earth’s systems interact continuously.

🔎 Think & Observe

Look at your surroundings and identify examples of air, water, soil, living organisms and sunlight interacting. Ask what might happen if one of these components changed significantly.

💨 2. Atmosphere and the Conditions for Life

The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding Earth. It provides gases needed by organisms, helps regulate temperature and participates in weather and the water cycle. The atmosphere is not separate from the rest of Earth: it interacts with oceans, land and living organisms.

💧 3. Water and the Water Cycle

Water moves continuously between Earth’s surface, atmosphere and living systems. Evaporation adds water vapour to the atmosphere; condensation forms clouds; precipitation returns water to Earth’s surface. Runoff, infiltration and groundwater storage continue the movement of water.

WATER CYCLE

🌊 Water bodies → Evaporation ↑ → ☁️ Condensation
☁️ → Precipitation ↓ → 🌧️ Land
Land → Runoff / Infiltration → 🌊 Water bodies / Groundwater

🧪 Activity

Observe a wet surface drying at different times of day. Record temperature, shade/sunlight and approximate drying time. Discuss which factors may affect evaporation.

🌱 4. Life Depends on Interconnected Systems

Plants use sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and minerals to grow. Animals depend directly or indirectly on plants for food. Decomposers return materials to the environment. These relationships connect the atmosphere, water, soil and living world.

🏭 5. Human Activities and Earth Systems

Human activities can alter air, water, soil, habitats and resource availability. Pollution, deforestation, excessive extraction of resources and inappropriate waste disposal can disturb natural cycles. Understanding the connection between actions and consequences helps us make evidence-based choices for sustainable living.

Human activity Possible environmental effect Responsible response
Excessive tree removal Habitat loss and soil changes Protection, restoration and responsible land use
Waste entering water Water quality can decline Segregation, treatment and responsible disposal
Excessive resource use Resource depletion Reduce, reuse, recycle and conserve
Air pollution Air quality and health can be affected Reduce emissions and improve clean-energy practices

📊 Earth as an Interconnected System

Component Role Connection
Atmosphere Gases, weather and temperature regulation Exchanges with oceans and organisms
Water Supports life and transports materials Moves through the water cycle
Land/soil Habitat and source of minerals Interacts with water, air and organisms
Living organisms Carry out biological processes Influence and depend on their environment

Answers: 1-A, 2-A, 3-A, 4-A, 5-B.

📌 Competency Case Study

A village depends on a nearby lake for water. Over several years, vegetation is removed around part of the lake and waste begins entering the water. The community notices changes in water quality and local organisms.

  1. Which Earth systems are interacting in this situation?
  2. How could removal of vegetation affect the local environment?
  3. What evidence should the community collect before deciding on solutions?
  4. Suggest practical measures that could protect the lake.

🔥 HOTS & Olympiad Thinking

  1. Why is it difficult to protect one part of Earth’s environment without considering connected systems?
  2. Explain how a change in the water cycle could affect living organisms.
  3. Design a school project to reduce one measurable environmental impact.
  4. Predict two possible consequences of removing a large area of vegetation and explain the links.

✍️ Exam-Ready Practice

  1. Explain why Earth is suitable for life.
  2. Describe the water cycle with a labelled diagram.
  3. Explain how atmosphere, water, land and living organisms interact.
  4. Explain the importance of decomposers in natural cycles.
  5. Describe two human activities that can disturb Earth systems and suggest responsible responses.

🎯 One-Minute Revision

Sun’s energy → Atmosphere + Water + Land → Living organisms → Interactions → Cycles → Human impact → Conservation.
