Chapter 10: Light: Mirrors and Lenses

NCERT-aligned • Detailed explanations • Visual learning • Competency practice

1. Light and reflection

We see an object when light from it, or light reflected from it, enters our eyes. When light strikes a surface and returns to the same medium, the process is called reflection. A smooth surface such as a polished mirror gives regular reflection, while rough surfaces produce scattered reflection.

🔎 Think & Observe

Identify one observation from everyday life connected with this concept. Separate what you directly observe from the explanation you infer.

🧪 Activity

Make a simple classroom observation or demonstration. Record the setup, observation, result and conclusion. Where possible, repeat the observation to improve reliability.

2. Plane mirror image

A plane mirror forms a virtual, upright image. The image appears the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front, and it shows lateral inversion. The image cannot be obtained on a screen.

3. Curved mirrors

A concave mirror curves inward and can converge parallel rays. A convex mirror curves outward and diverges rays. The different ray behaviour explains their different uses.

🧪 Activity

Make a simple classroom observation or demonstration. Record the setup, observation, result and conclusion. Where possible, repeat the observation to improve reliability.

4. Lenses

A convex lens is generally thicker in the middle and converges parallel rays. A concave lens is thinner in the middle and diverges parallel rays. Lenses are used in spectacles, cameras, magnifiers and scientific instruments.

🔎 Think & Observe

🧪 Activity

Make a simple classroom observation or demonstration. Record the setup, observation, result and conclusion. Where possible, repeat the observation to improve reliability.

5. Ray diagrams

A ray diagram represents the path of light using straight lines with arrows. A simple diagram should show the principal axis and the optical surface clearly. Ray diagrams help predict image formation and explain applications.

Answers: 1-A, 2-A, 3-A, 4-A.

📌 Competency Case Study

A student compares a plane mirror and a convex mirror while standing in the same position. The convex mirror shows a larger region of the room.

  1. Identify the main scientific concept involved.
  2. What observations should be recorded?
  3. Give one possible explanation.
  4. Suggest one additional observation that could test the explanation.

🔥 HOTS & Olympiad Thinking

  1. Explain why the concept can be useful in a real-life situation.
  2. Design a simple investigation related to the chapter.
  3. Predict what could happen if one important factor changes.
  4. Explain why evidence is important before accepting an explanation.

✍️ Exam Practice

  1. Explain the main concept with a labelled diagram.
  2. Differentiate two related concepts from this chapter.
  3. Give two applications or examples.
  4. Describe one activity and its conclusion.
  5. Answer a case-based question using evidence.
