Chapter 9 — Life Processes in Animals
Nutrition • Digestion • Respiration • Circulation • Excretion
🌟 Chapter at a Glance
Animals obtain food, digest it, absorb nutrients, respire, transport materials, remove wastes and coordinate responses. Different animals have different structures suited to their ways of life.
🍎 1. Nutrition and Digestion
Food provides nutrients and energy. In humans, digestion begins in the mouth, continues through the stomach and small intestine, and the digested nutrients are absorbed mainly through the small intestine.
🫁 2. Respiration
Respiration involves processes that release usable energy from food. In humans, oxygen enters through the respiratory system and carbon dioxide is removed. Breathing and cellular respiration are related but not identical terms.
❤️ 3. Transport
The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients and other substances. The heart pumps blood through blood vessels. Blood also carries carbon dioxide and wastes toward organs involved in their removal.
🚽 4. Excretion
Excretion removes metabolic waste products from the body. In humans, kidneys filter blood and help form urine; lungs also remove carbon dioxide and water vapour.
🔗 5. Interdependence of Processes
| Process | Connection |
|---|---|
| Digestion | Provides absorbable nutrients |
| Respiration | Releases usable energy |
| Circulation | Moves materials around the body |
| Excretion | Removes metabolic wastes |
🎯 Think
Why would a problem in one life process affect other processes? Use the relationship between digestion, circulation and respiration in your explanation.
🧩 Interactive MCQs
- Most nutrient absorption in humans occurs in the: A. Small intestine B. Mouth C. Oesophagus D. Large intestine
- The organ that pumps blood is the: A. Heart B. Kidney C. Lung D. Stomach
- Removal of metabolic wastes is called: A. Excretion B. Digestion C. Nutrition D. Growth
- Gas required for aerobic respiration in humans is mainly: A. Oxygen B. Nitrogen C. Hydrogen D. Helium
Answers: A, B, C, D
📌 Case-Based Learning
A student eats a meal before a sports event. The food must be digested and absorbed, nutrients transported, oxygen supplied and wastes removed.
- Identify the scientific concept involved.
- What evidence or observation would you collect?
- Explain the result using the chapter concepts.
- Suggest one practical application.
🔥 HOTS / Competition Corner
- Trace the journey of food from mouth to small intestine.
- Explain how the circulatory system connects digestion and respiration.
- Why would efficient excretion be important after active exercise?
