Chapter 6 — Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change
Puberty • Hormones • Nutrition • Hygiene • Emotional Wellbeing
🌟 Chapter at a Glance
Adolescence is a period of transition between childhood and adulthood. During puberty, the body undergoes changes due to hormones, while emotional, social and cognitive development also continues. These changes occur at different times for different people and should be understood without shame or comparison.
🧬 1. Puberty and Hormonal Changes
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands. During puberty, hormones trigger maturation of reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics. These changes are normal parts of development.
📈 2. Growth Is Not Identical for Everyone
Height, body shape, voice and other changes do not happen at exactly the same age for everyone. Nutrition, heredity, health and other factors influence development. Comparing oneself with a friend is therefore not a reliable measure of “normal”.
🥗 3. Nutrition, Hygiene and Sleep
| Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Balanced diet | Supports growth, tissues and energy needs |
| Iron and other nutrients | Support healthy blood and body functions |
| Hygiene | Helps prevent infections and manages increased sweating |
| Sleep and activity | Support physical and mental wellbeing |
🧠 4. Emotional and Social Changes
Adolescents may experience changing emotions, stronger peer relationships and a growing sense of identity. Seeking trusted adult support when confused or worried is a strength, not a weakness.
🛡️ 5. Reliable Information and Personal Safety
Body-related information should come from trustworthy sources such as health professionals, teachers and reliable educational resources. Personal boundaries matter, and any uncomfortable or unsafe situation should be shared with a trusted adult.
🎯 Think & Explore
