Detailed notes • Concepts • Activities • Important questions • Competency practice • MCQs • Worksheet
🎯 Learning Goals
- Understand diversity in language, food, clothing, festivals and ways of life.
- Explain how people can have multiple identities.
- Recognise shared practices alongside differences.
- Use examples to understand unity in diversity.
🌈 Understanding Diversity
India has great diversity in geography, languages, food habits, clothing, occupations, festivals, arts and social practices. Diversity can be observed between regions and also within the same region.
🤝 Shared Connections
People with different customs may share common values, institutions, economic links, stories, artistic forms or practices. Shared connections can exist alongside distinct regional identities.
🗣️ Language and Culture
Languages and dialects carry histories, literature, songs and local knowledge. Multilingualism is common in many parts of India, and languages influence one another through contact.
🍲 Food, Clothing and Festivals
Food and clothing often reflect local climate, available materials, agriculture and historical interaction. Festivals may have different forms and meanings across communities.
🧩 Multiple Identities
A person can simultaneously identify with a family, locality, language, profession, school, region and country. These identities can overlap rather than being mutually exclusive.
🔬 Activity
Create a “diversity map” of your class: languages spoken, foods represented, festivals observed and localities represented. Focus on respectful observation rather than judging differences.
