Mixtures can be separated by using differences in physical properties. Handpicking removes large unwanted particles; sieving separates solids by particle size; winnowing separates lighter husk from heavier grain; sedimentation and decantation separate settled solids from liquids; filtration separates insoluble solids; evaporation can recover a dissolved solid such as salt.
