Chapter 8 – Playing with Constructions
Chapter-specific notes • Geometry tools • Circles • Line segments • Constructions • Reasoning • Practice • MCQs • Worksheet
Chapter focus: Geometrical constructions use tools and accurate steps to create figures with specified properties. This chapter develops precision, observation and geometric reasoning.
🎯 Learning Goals
- Recognise and use basic geometry instruments.
- Understand construction of line segments.
- Use a compass to draw circles and arcs.
- Construct figures from given measurements.
- Follow construction steps accurately.
- Check and explain the result of a construction.
📏 1. Geometry Instruments
- Ruler: measures and draws straight line segments.
- Compass: draws circles and arcs and transfers distances.
- Protractor: measures and constructs angles when required.
- Set square: helps draw particular angles and perpendicular/parallel lines in suitable contexts.
⭕ 2. Circle Basics
A circle is the set of points at the same distance from a fixed point called the centre.
Radius: distance from centre to the circle. Diameter: a line segment through the centre joining two points on the circle. The diameter is twice the radius.
📐 3. Constructing a Line Segment
To draw a line segment of a specified length, use a ruler carefully and mark the required endpoints.
- Place the ruler on the page.
- Mark the first endpoint.
- Measure the required length.
- Mark the second endpoint.
- Join the points with a straight line.
🧭 4. Copying a Length with a Compass
A compass can transfer a distance without repeatedly measuring it with a ruler.
- Set the compass opening to the given segment.
- Keep the opening fixed.
- Place the compass point at the new starting point.
- Make an arc to mark the transferred distance.
🔺 5. Constructing from Given Conditions
Before beginning a construction, identify what is given and what must be produced. Use the instrument that controls the required distance or angle, and keep measurements accurate.
⚠️ 6. Common Construction Errors
- Changing the compass width accidentally.
- Reading the ruler from the wrong mark.
- Using a thick or unclear pencil line.
- Failing to label points.
- Skipping a construction step.
- Assuming a figure is correct without checking its measurements.
📋 Worked Construction Examples
Example 1 – Draw a 6 cm Segment
- Draw a straight line using a ruler.
- Mark point A.
- Measure 6 cm from A and mark B.
- Draw the segment AB.
- Check AB with the ruler.
Example 2 – Draw a Circle of Radius 4 cm
- Mark centre O.
- Open the compass to 4 cm using the ruler.
- Keep the compass point at O.
- Rotate the pencil leg around O to complete the circle.
Example 3 – Check a Construction
If a segment is required to be 8 cm, measure it after construction. If the measurement differs, repeat the construction accurately rather than assuming it is close enough.
🧠 Construction Reasoning
- Why is a compass useful for transferring a length?
- Why should the compass opening remain unchanged when copying a distance?
- Why is accuracy more important than drawing a figure that merely looks correct?
- What could happen if the ruler is not aligned with the endpoints?
- Why should construction points be labelled?
📝 Important Practice Questions
- Name four instruments used in elementary geometry.
- Define radius and diameter.
- Draw a line segment of 5 cm.
- Draw a circle with radius 3 cm.
- Construct a segment of 7 cm using a ruler.
- Transfer a given segment using a compass.
- Explain two common construction errors.
- Why should a construction be checked after completion?
- Describe the steps for constructing a circle of a given radius.
- Explain how a compass can act as a distance-transfer tool.
🔥 Competency / HOTS Questions
- A student measures a segment as 5 cm but constructs it as 4.8 cm. What should be checked?
- Why can a compass transfer a distance more reliably than estimating it by eye?
- If the radius of a circle is doubled, what happens to its diameter?
- Two students draw circles with the same radius but different centres. Are the circles equal in size? Explain.
- Design a construction challenge for a classmate that requires both a ruler and compass.
