Unit 1 — Fables and Folk Tales
This unit brings together stories that use imagination and humour to explore human behaviour. ‘A Bottle of Dew’ follows Rama Natha, whose belief in a magical potion leads him to waste his effort until a wiser lesson changes his understanding. The fables and folk tales encourage students to distinguish hard work, wisdom and responsibility from wishful thinking.
Unit 2 — Friendship
The unit explores friendship through stories and poems, including the unlikely bond between an elephant and a dog. It asks what makes relationships meaningful and how care, loyalty, empathy and acceptance can overcome differences.
Unit 3 — Nurturing Nature
The unit develops awareness of plants, nature and human responsibility. ‘Neem Baba’ uses a conversation with a neem tree to explore the tree’s history, names, uses and ecological value, while other texts connect people with the natural world.
Unit 4 — Sports and Wellness
The unit connects sport with physical fitness, discipline and character. ‘Change of Heart’ highlights sporting spirit, fair play and respect for opponents, while the unit also develops language for discussing games, competition and wellbeing.
Unit 5 — Culture and Tradition
The unit explores India’s cultural richness through texts about traditions, places, people and shared heritage. It encourages students to notice diversity while recognising values and practices that connect communities.
