Introducing Western Sociologists

Context

Sociology developed as thinkers tried to understand major transformations associated with industrialisation, urbanisation, capitalism and political change. Three classical thinkers in the CBSE syllabus are Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber.

Karl Marx — Class Conflict

Marx analysed society through relations of production and class. In capitalist society, the bourgeoisie own the means of production while workers sell their labour. His analysis emphasised conflict arising from unequal economic relations.

Emile Durkheim — Division of Labour

Durkheim examined how societies maintain cohesion. Mechanical solidarity is associated with similarities and a strong collective consciousness, while organic solidarity develops with increasing differentiation and interdependence.

Max Weber — Interpretive Sociology

Weber argued that sociology should understand social action by interpreting the meanings actors attach to their actions. His concept of the ideal type is an analytical construct used to compare and understand social phenomena. Bureaucracy describes a form of organisation characterised by rules, hierarchy, specialised roles and formal procedures.
