📖 Chapter Overview
Nationalism connects political identity with a shared sense of belonging to a nation. It has played an important role in anti-colonial movements and self-determination, while also raising questions about minorities, pluralism and the boundaries of national membership.
Nation and state
A nation refers to a community connected by a sense of shared identity; a state is a political and legal institution exercising authority over a territory. The two concepts can overlap but are not identical.
Sources of national identity
Language, history, culture, territory, shared political aspirations and collective memories can contribute to national identity. No single factor is necessary in every case.
Nationalism and anti-colonialism
In many contexts nationalism became a basis for resisting colonial domination and demanding self-rule. Indian nationalism developed in a highly diverse society and therefore faced the challenge of creating common political identity without erasing diversity.
Self-determination
The principle of self-determination holds that peoples should have a say in determining their political status. Its application can be contested when multiple groups claim the same territory.
Pluralism
A democratic nation can recognise multiple identities. Inclusive nationalism seeks common political membership without requiring cultural uniformity.
Risks of exclusion
When national identity is defined narrowly, minorities may be treated as less authentic members. Political theory therefore asks how national solidarity can coexist with equal citizenship.
