Chapter 5: Life Processes
Detailed Notes • Diagrams • Experiments • Competency • Board Practice
📖 Chapter Explanation
Life processes maintain an organism’s functioning. This chapter connects nutrition, respiration, transport and excretion in plants and animals, emphasising how specialised structures support the movement and use of materials.
🧭 Concept Map
🔬 Core Science Concepts
Plants manufacture food through photosynthesis using light energy, carbon dioxide and water. Animals obtain nutrients through digestion. Cellular respiration releases usable energy from food, with aerobic respiration generally producing more energy than anaerobic pathways.
💡 Worked Example / Observation
In humans, digested nutrients are absorbed mainly through the small intestine, whose large surface area supports efficient absorption. The circulatory system then transports substances to cells.
🖼️ Diagram & Visual Study
Draw and label: a key diagram/process from this chapter. Add arrows showing the sequence or relationships, then write one function/observation beside each labelled part. This page is designed to be paired with textbook figures for visual revision.
⚠️ Common Errors
Do not describe breathing and respiration as the same process. Breathing exchanges gases; cellular respiration is the chemical process that releases energy.
🧠 Concept-Based MCQs
- Photosynthesis requires: A) carbon dioxide, water and light B) oxygen only C) nitrogen only D) glucose and oxygen only
- The functional unit of the kidney is the: A) nephron B) neuron C) alveolus D) villus
- Gas exchange in human lungs occurs mainly in: A) bronchi B) alveoli C) trachea D) diaphragm
- The main function of red blood cells is to transport: A) oxygen B) bile C) urine D) starch
Answer Key: 1-A, 2-A, 3-B, 4-A.
📊 Case-Based / Competency
A student runs a race and begins breathing faster. Explain why breathing rate and heart rate increase and how oxygen and glucose are connected to energy release.
- Identify the scientific concept.
- Use the relevant equation, process or diagram.
- Explain the observation using scientific reasoning.
- State and justify the conclusion.
🔎 Extension Case
During vigorous exercise, muscles require more energy. Students trace the movement of oxygen and glucose, explain increased breathing and heart rate, and compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
🔥 HOTS & Board Challenge
- Predict what would happen if one condition changed.
- Explain the observation at the particle/cellular/system level where appropriate.
- Correct a plausible misconception and justify your correction.
- Design a simple investigation to test a related idea.
✍️ Exam Practice
- Define the central scientific terms.
- Explain one process using a labelled diagram.
- Write and balance/interpret an equation where applicable.
- Solve a competency-based situation.
- Answer a 5-mark board-style question with reasoning.
🧪 Activity / Experiment Corner
- State the aim.
- List the key materials/conditions.
- Predict the observation.
- Record the result.
- Explain the scientific principle.
📄 Practice Worksheet
- 5 concept checks
- 5 application questions
- 3 diagram/process questions
- 2 case-based questions
- 2 HOTS questions
- 1 board-style challenge
