Chapter 3 – The Midnight Visitor

Complete NCERT guide • Robert Arthur • Ausable • Max • suspense • intelligence • competency and board practice

📖 Chapter Overview

“The Midnight Visitor” by Robert Arthur is a suspenseful story about Ausable, a secret agent, and Fowler, a writer who expects an exciting spy adventure. Instead, Ausable appears ordinary and unremarkable. When an armed intruder named Max enters Ausable’s room, Ausable uses intelligence and psychological strategy rather than physical force to control the situation.

🕵️ Fowler Meets Ausable

Fowler is disappointed when he first sees Ausable because the agent does not resemble the glamorous spies he has imagined. Ausable is described as ordinary-looking and somewhat overweight. The story quickly challenges Fowler’s expectations about what a successful secret agent should look like.

🔫 Max Appears

Inside Ausable’s room, Fowler discovers Max waiting with a pistol. Max wants an important report that is expected to arrive. He believes he has the advantage because he is armed.

🧠 Ausable’s Strategy

Ausable remains calm and invents a story about a balcony outside his window. He claims that someone has entered his room through the balcony before. Although the balcony does not actually exist, Max believes the explanation because Ausable presents it confidently.

🚪 The Imaginary Balcony

When there is a knock at the door, Ausable says it is the police coming to check on him. Max becomes frightened and decides to escape through the window using the supposed balcony. He jumps and falls because the balcony was only part of Ausable’s deception.

Fowler’s expectations → Max’s threat → Ausable stays calm → Invented balcony → Knock at door → Max attempts escape → Ausable’s plan succeeds
