Chapter 3 – Two Stories About Flying

Complete NCERT guide • His First Flight • The Black Aeroplane • explanation • themes • literary features • competency practice

📖 Chapter Overview

This chapter contains two independent stories connected by the idea of flying. “His First Flight” by Liam O’Flaherty follows a young seagull who is afraid to fly but finally discovers his ability. “The Black Aeroplane” by Frederick Forsyth is a mysterious story about a pilot who encounters a strange black aeroplane during a storm.

🕊️ Part I – His First Flight

1. The Young Seagull’s Fear

The young seagull is afraid to leave the ledge and fly. His brothers and sister have already learned to fly, while he remains alone. His parents scold and encourage him, but fear prevents him from taking the first step.

2. Hunger Changes the Situation

After being left alone, the young seagull becomes extremely hungry. His mother approaches with a piece of fish but stops just beyond his reach. Driven by hunger, he dives toward the food. In doing so, he discovers that his wings can support him.

3. The Moment of Success

At first he is terrified, but soon he realises that he is flying. His family encourages him, and he joins them in the air. The story shows how a difficult first attempt can transform fear into confidence.

💡 Central Idea of “His First Flight”

The story illustrates that fear can prevent us from recognising our own abilities. Support, necessity and a willingness to take the first step can help a person overcome fear and gain confidence.

👤 Young Seagull – Character Study

  • Fearful: he hesitates to leave the ledge.
  • Inexperienced: he has not yet tested his wings.
  • Capable: once he tries, he discovers that he can fly.
  • Transformative: his fear changes into confidence.

🧭 Story 1 Flow

Fear → Isolation → Hunger → Mother’s Challenge → Leap → Discovery → Confidence → Freedom

✈️ Part II – The Black Aeroplane

1. The Pilot’s Journey

The narrator is flying his old Dakota aircraft toward England. He sees the lights of Paris and expects to reach home soon. However, a large storm appears ahead.

2. Entering the Storm

The narrator decides to fly into the storm rather than turn back. Inside the clouds, visibility is poor, the compass stops functioning properly and the other instruments create uncertainty. He becomes lost and worried about fuel.

3. The Mysterious Black Aeroplane

A strange black aeroplane appears beside the narrator. Its pilot signals that the narrator should follow. The narrator follows the mysterious plane through the storm and eventually sees the runway lights of an airfield.

4. The Mystery

After landing, the narrator asks about the other aircraft. The woman at the control centre tells him that no other aeroplane is visible on the radar and that his aircraft was the only one detected. The story ends without explaining who—or what—the black aeroplane was.

🌩️ Central Idea of “The Black Aeroplane”

The story combines adventure, uncertainty and mystery. It creates suspense by giving the narrator—and the reader—insufficient information to explain the strange aircraft.

🧭 Story 2 Flow

Flight → Storm → Lost Instruments → Black Aeroplane → Guidance → Safe Landing → Unexplained Mystery

🔗 Common Theme

Although the stories are very different, both involve flying as an experience that tests a person’s response to uncertainty. The young seagull faces internal fear; the narrator of “The Black Aeroplane” faces an external and unexplained danger.
