Chapter 8 – The Sermon at Benares

Complete NCERT guide • Gautama Buddha • Kisa Gotami • themes • vocabulary • competency practice

📖 Chapter Overview

“The Sermon at Benares” presents the story of Kisa Gotami and the teaching of Gautama Buddha on suffering, death and acceptance. After losing her only son, Kisa Gotami desperately seeks a way to bring him back to life. Buddha guides her through an experience that helps her understand that death is universal and that attachment can deepen suffering.

🪷 Gautama Buddha and the Search for Truth

Before becoming the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama lived a protected life. His encounters with old age, illness, death and a monk made him realise that suffering is an unavoidable part of human existence. He left his sheltered life in search of truth and eventually attained enlightenment.

👩 Kisa Gotami’s Loss

Kisa Gotami’s only son dies. Unable to accept his death, she carries him from house to house asking for medicine. People consider her grief overwhelming, but she continues searching for someone who can help her.

🌱 Buddha’s Lesson

Buddha tells Kisa Gotami that he can help her if she brings mustard seeds from a household where nobody has ever died. She visits many homes and receives mustard seeds, but every household has experienced death. Gradually she understands the point of Buddha’s request.

Loss → Denial → Search for a cure → Encounters with other families → Realisation → Acceptance → Understanding

🕊️ The Central Teaching

The story teaches that death is a universal part of life. No family can escape it. Buddha’s approach does not simply tell Kisa Gotami to accept death; instead, he allows her to discover the truth through experience.

💭 Suffering and Attachment

The chapter explains that excessive attachment can intensify suffering. Human beings naturally experience grief, but wisdom involves understanding the impermanent nature of life and learning to face loss with acceptance.

👤 Character Study: Kisa Gotami

  • Grief-stricken: she cannot initially accept her son’s death.
  • Determined: she searches persistently for medicine.
  • Emotionally attached: her love for her son makes acceptance difficult.
  • Open to learning: she follows Buddha’s instructions.
  • Transformed: she moves from denial toward understanding.

🧘 Character Study: Gautama Buddha

  • Compassionate: he responds to Kisa Gotami’s suffering with sensitivity.
  • Wise: he understands that direct explanation may not be enough.
  • Practical teacher: he gives her an experience through which she discovers the truth herself.
