CBSE Class 9 Scheme of Studies 2026–27: Important Changes, Skill Subjects and Board Exam Rules

CBSE has issued an important clarification for the Class IX 2026–27 batch through Circular No. Acad-70/2026 dated 29 October 2026. The clarification affects the subjects students will study in Class IX and the assessment route they will follow when they move to Class X in 2027–28. Schools should review the circular before finalising subject choices, timetables and parent communication.

Who does this circular apply to?

The instructions apply to students currently studying in Class IX during 2026–27 and progressing to Class X during 2027–28. CBSE has specifically clarified that the existing scheme continues for students who are already in Class X during 2026–27. Schools should therefore avoid applying these changes to the wrong batch.

What has CBSE clarified?

1. Interdisciplinary area changes for this batch

For the specified batches, the subject Individuals in Society and the Modules of Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) in Class IX will not form part of the curriculum. Similarly, Environmental Education in Class X (2027–28) will not be part of the curriculum for this batch.

2. Vocational Education remains compulsory

Vocational Education (Skill Education) continues as a compulsory curricular area. Students have two routes to fulfil this requirement:

  • Kaushal Vikas: assessed through school-based internal assessment. Students choosing this route will not sit for a separate Class X Board examination in Kaushal Vikas.
  • One of the 22 notified Skill Subjects: students choosing a skill subject will appear for the Board examination in that subject in Class X (2027–28). The subject list is provided in Annexure I of the circular.

The notified options include Retail, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Healthcare, Tourism, Banking and Insurance, Design Thinking and Innovation, and other skill subjects. Schools should consult the official annexure for the complete list and subject codes before offering choices.

3. Other optional subjects continue

Other optional subjects available under the 2025–26 Scheme of Studies will continue to be offered for the specified Class IX and Class X batches, subject to the conditions in the circular.

Which subjects will have a Class X Board examination?

According to the circular’s FAQ, the five core subjects assessed through the Class X Board examination for this batch are:

  1. Language R1
  2. Language R2
  3. Mathematics
  4. Science
  5. Social Science

Additional Board examinations apply where students opt for specified subjects, including an optional subject, Mathematics Advanced, Science Advanced, or one of the 22 Skill Subjects instead of Kaushal Vikas. The circular also sets out the internal-assessment arrangements for Language R3, Art Education, Physical Education & Well-being and Kaushal Vikas.

What should school principals and academic coordinators do now?

  1. Identify the correct cohort: clearly separate the Class IX 2026–27 batch from the current Class X 2026–27 batch.
  2. Review subject combinations: check the school’s proposed subject offerings against the Scheme of Studies and the circular’s tables and FAQs.
  3. Plan vocational education: decide which of the permitted skill subjects the school can offer, or how Kaushal Vikas will be delivered and assessed. Confirm teacher availability, infrastructure and any applicable subject requirements before communicating options.
  4. Explain assessment implications: make it clear to parents and students that a notified Skill Subject leads to a Class X Board examination, while Kaushal Vikas is internally assessed.
  5. Update academic records and planning: align subject-selection forms, timetable planning, teacher allocation, internal-assessment schedules and student records with the applicable scheme.
  6. Brief teachers and parents: share the official circular and hold a short orientation so that no one relies on outdated summaries or hearsay.

Important clarification for teachers

Do not assume that every student must take a separate Skill Subject Board examination. The school and student must understand the two permitted vocational education routes. Also, do not apply the Class IX 2026–27 changes to the students who are already in Class X in 2026–27; CBSE has expressly stated that the old scheme continues for that cohort.
