1. What You Need to Learn

Structure and classification; nomenclature; preparation; properties; basicity; diazonium salts; reactions of aromatic amines.

2. Core Concepts & Formulae

Amines are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary. Basicity depends on electron availability and the medium. Important preparations include reduction of nitro compounds, ammonolysis and other standard routes. Aniline forms diazonium salts under cold acidic conditions, enabling several aromatic substitution transformations.

3. Common Mistakes

Do not rank amine basicity without considering solvent and structure. For diazotisation, remember the low-temperature acidic conditions and the importance of the diazonium group as a synthetic intermediate.

4. Exam-Focused Practice

  1. Compare basicity of ammonia, aliphatic amines and aniline.
  2. Write diazotisation and two reactions of benzene diazonium chloride.
  3. Convert a nitro compound to an amine and identify products of common amine reactions.

5. Quick Revision Checklist

  • Can you define the key terms without looking at the book?
  • Can you explain the main trend/reaction/mechanism with a reason?
  • Can you solve a numerical or predict a product independently?
  • Can you answer an application or competency-based question?
NCERT/CBSE note: Use the latest prescribed NCERT textbook and official CBSE curriculum as the final authority for examination preparation.
