1. What You Need to Learn
Rate of reaction; factors affecting rate; integrated rate equations; temperature dependence; Arrhenius equation; collision theory.
2. Core Concepts & Formulae
For a first-order reaction, k = (2.303/t) log(a/(a−x)) and t1/2 = 0.693/k. Arrhenius equation: k = A e^(−Ea/RT); log(k2/k1) = Ea/(2.303R) (1/T1 − 1/T2). Reaction rate depends on concentration, temperature, catalyst and other factors.
3. Common Mistakes
Do not assume the order from the balanced equation unless the reaction is elementary or the question explicitly allows it. Distinguish average rate from instantaneous rate and use the correct integrated equation for the stated order.
4. Exam-Focused Practice
- Determine the order from experimental data.
- Calculate the half-life of a first-order reaction.
- Use two temperature-rate data points to estimate activation energy and explain the role of a catalyst.
5. Quick Revision Checklist
- Can you define the key terms without looking at the book?
- Can you explain the main trend/reaction/mechanism with a reason?
- Can you solve a numerical or predict a product independently?
- Can you answer an application or competency-based question?
