Chapter 8: Predicting What Comes Next: Exploring Sequences and Progressions
NCERT 2026–27 aligned • Concept-first • Worked examples • Visual learning • Competency practice
📖 Chapter Explanation
Sequences describe ordered patterns. This chapter develops systematic ways of identifying a rule, generating terms and predicting future terms. Arithmetic and geometric progressions provide two important models, while visual patterns connect algebraic rules with numerical growth.
🧭 Learning Journey
📐 Key Concepts & Mathematics
In an arithmetic progression, consecutive terms have a constant difference d. In a geometric progression, consecutive terms have a constant ratio r. Recognising which quantity remains constant is the key first step.
💡 Worked Example
For 5,8,11,14,… the common difference is 3, so the nth term is aₙ=5+(n−1)3. For 2,6,18,54,… the common ratio is 3.
🔍 Why It Works
A sequence may look patterned without being arithmetic or geometric. Students should test differences and ratios rather than assume a familiar pattern.
⚠️ Common Errors
The most common mistake is extending a sequence by visual guess alone. A good mathematical rule must work for every given term and explain why the next term follows.
📊 Quick Reference
| Concept | Remember | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | State what the quantity/relationship means. | Use correct mathematical language. |
| Method | Choose a method that matches the structure. | Show intermediate steps. |
| Units/signs | Keep units and signs consistent. | Check dimensions or values. |
| Reasoning | Explain why the result follows. | Substitute back or compare with the model. |

- The next term of 2,6,18,54 is: A) 72 B) 108 C) 162 D) 216
- An arithmetic progression has: A) constant difference B) constant product only C) random terms D) constant square
- The nth term of an AP is: A) a+nd B) a+(n−1)d C) adⁿ D) a/n
Answer Key: 1-B, 2-C, 3-A, 4-B.
📌 Case-Based / Competency Question
A tile pattern uses 4,7,10,13,… tiles in successive figures. Find the next two terms and describe an algebraic rule for the nth figure.
- Identify the mathematical concept.
- Represent the information mathematically.
- Solve or analyse it step by step.
- Explain how you verified the answer.
🔎 Extension Case
A school seating arrangement increases by the same number of seats in each row. Students create a table, identify the common difference, predict later rows and explain why their formula works.
