Chapter 5: I’m Up and Down, and Round and Round

NCERT 2026–27 aligned • Concept-first • Worked examples • Visual learning • Competency practice

📖 Chapter Explanation

This chapter uses familiar circular motion to build mathematical understanding of angles, degrees and radians, trigonometric ideas and periodic behaviour. The key learning is to connect rotation, angle measure and the coordinates of points on a circle rather than treating trigonometric values as isolated tables.

🧭 Learning Journey

rotation → angle → degree/radian measure → unit circle → trigonometric ratios → periodicity

📐 Key Concepts & Mathematics

A full turn is 360° or 2π radians. On the unit circle, a point corresponding to an angle θ has coordinates (cosθ, sinθ). This makes the signs and values of sine and cosine meaningful rather than purely memorised.

💡 Worked Example

For 180°, θ=π radians. For 90°, θ=π/2 radians. At 0°, the unit-circle point is (1,0), so cos0°=1 and sin0°=0.

🔍 Why It Works

Angles can be coterminal: adding or subtracting 360° does not change the terminal position. This explains periodicity in circular motion and in trigonometric functions.

⚠️ Common Errors

Students often confuse degrees and radians, or forget that sine corresponds to the y-coordinate and cosine to the x-coordinate on the unit circle.

📊 Quick Reference

Concept Remember Check
Definition State what the quantity/relationship means. Use correct mathematical language.
Method Choose a method that matches the structure. Show intermediate steps.
Units/signs Keep units and signs consistent. Check dimensions or values.

🧠 Concept-Based MCQs

  1. 270° equals: A) π/2 B) π C) 3π/2 D) 2π
  2. On the unit circle, cosθ represents the: A) y-coordinate B) x-coordinate C) radius only D) angle only
  3. A complete rotation is: A) π B) 2π C) π/2 D) 4π radians
  4. At 90°, sinθ is: A) 0 B) 1 C) −1 D) undefined

Answer Key: 1-C, 2-B, 3-B, 4-B.

📌 Case-Based / Competency Question

A wheel rotates through 270°. Express the rotation in radians and identify the signs of sine and cosine at the terminal position.

  1. Identify the mathematical concept.
  2. Represent the information mathematically.
  3. Solve or analyse it step by step.
  4. Explain how you verified the answer.

🔎 Extension Case

A rotating observation wheel is marked at equal angular intervals. Students determine the radian measure of a marked position, predict the next position after one full revolution, and explain why the pattern repeats.

🔥 HOTS & Competition Corner
