Chapter 4: Exploring Algebraic Identities
NCERT 2026–27 aligned • Concept-first • Worked examples • Visual learning • Competency practice
📖 Chapter Explanation
This chapter develops identities as statements that remain true for all permissible values of variables. Instead of treating identities as formulas to memorise, the chapter builds them through visual area models, algebra tiles, factorisation and numerical patterns. It progresses from square identities to cubic identities and rational expressions.
🧭 Learning Journey
📐 Key Concepts & Mathematics
(a+b)²=a²+2ab+b²; (a−b)²=a²−2ab+b²; (a+b+c)²=a²+b²+c²+2ab+2bc+2ca; (a+b)(a−b)=a²−b²; (x+a)(x+b)=x²+(a+b)x+ab; cubic sum/difference identities
💡 Worked Example
For x²+8x+15, find two numbers whose sum is 8 and product is 15: 3 and 5. Therefore x²+8x+15=(x+3)(x+5). Always multiply back to verify.
🔍 Why It Works
Use identities for fast calculation, expansion and factorisation. Algebra tiles make the middle-term split visible; rational expressions are simplified only after factorising and observing denominator restrictions.
⚠️ Common Errors
A common error is applying an identity with the wrong sign. Another is cancelling terms instead of common factors in rational expressions.

📌 Case-Based / Competency Question
A rectangle has area x²+8x+15. Show how factorisation gives its possible dimensions. Explain why your factorisation is valid.
- Identify the mathematical concept.
- Represent the information mathematically.
- Solve or analyse it step by step.
- Explain how you verified the answer.
🔎 Extension Case
x²+8x+15=(x+3)(x+5) demonstrates how an algebraic expression can represent the area of a rectangle. Ask students to identify the two side lengths, verify the area by multiplication, and explain the connection between geometry and factorisation.
