Mountains, plateaus and plains differ in elevation, slope and surface characteristics. Mountains often have steep slopes and affect rainfall and river systems. Plateaus are elevated relatively level areas, while plains are generally flatter and support extensive agriculture and dense settlement where soils and water permit.
