Materials are chosen because of properties such as hardness, flexibility, transparency, solubility, density and conductivity. Metals are generally good conductors, while materials such as rubber and many plastics are poor conductors. Glass is transparent, while wood may be hard and relatively opaque. The same material can be useful for different purposes depending on its properties.
